Live Review: THIS THAT FESTIVAL @ Wickham Park

Unlike last year, Newcastle’s Wickham Park had an absolute scorcher of a day for This That 2018. Tens of thousands of punters united for what was a bloody ripper of a day with a mostly all-time Aussie line up. Kicking off the day were Triple J Unearthed star, Samsaruh. Coming off the back off an epic successful year claiming the #1 played track on Triple J last year, I was stoked to finally see this absolute babe live. Was so stoked to finally see her sing “Beautiful Killer” live, being one of my fave picks of songs of the festival. Straight after, I caught the end of Ninajirachi’s set. The mini dj, recently signed by powerhouse Nina Las Vegas, of NLV Records was a pocket full of fun. Despite being in the absolute peak of the heat of the day, she had the whole crowd in the tent going for it. She had bits and pieces from fellow record member, Swick, as well as a few of NLV’s numbers. Would definitely be keen to catch her again. Album Review: Lil Yachty "Nuthin' 2 Prove"

Lil Yatchy dropped off his third studio album, and second album of the year, with Nuthin' 2 Prove. As the title suggests, Yachty has found himself with a swell of confidence that allowed him to take this project on with the bar set apathetically low. His freshman effort, Teenage Emotions, solidified his lead on the "bubblegum trap" genre, but was largely considered a disappointment to fans. After mediocre sales and mixed reviews, Lil Boat made a U-Turn and dropped a second album entitled Lil Boat 2. His sophomore effort catered to his built-in audience and was received in a much more positive light than Teenage Emotions. With Nuthin' 2 Prove, Yachty exudes a sense of awareness,  confidence and a nonchalant attitude all at once. There's a lot of sentiment packed into the succinct title, leaving it up for interpretation-- is "Nuthin 2 Prove" meant as a slight towards his fans (who seemingly turned on him) or his critics (constant detractors that they are),...

Live Review: SMASHMOUTH @ Eatons Hill

Somebody once told me that Smashmouth was coming to town and I nearly wet myself with excitement. Seeing ‘Allstar’ live on stage is every 2000 kids dream come true. The night was teaming with potential and excitement as crowds piled in, got their drinks and formed a crowd around the stage. Finally, once the anticipation had overcome everyone in the room they entered, their energy radiating as the crowd cheered in excitement. They immediately broke into song, opening with their track ‘Can’t get enough of you Babe’ from their classic 1999 album ‘Astro Lounge.’ The crowd was immediately engaged as singer Steve Harwell bounced around the stage. They then addressed the crowd and got the night underway. Not long after this they played their classic cover of ‘why can’t we be friends,’ another one they made their own with their classic bouncy 90’s twist on it. It was hard not to rock out to this tune.
